The Demon of Complexity is the spiritual force which rules all mankind. It has attained its present form by the combination of mental imperialism with a postmodern technological civilization.
The individual human beings involved in the activity of the Demon are only aware of a narrow section of the activity. However, the combined motifs of all unenlightened individuals together constitute a force that seems to have intentions of its own.
Some noticeable effects of the Demon of Complexity:
- Human life becomes more and more complex in all areas. More and more layers are being created between the vital things - such as food production - and the actual experience of life.
- Humans specialize in increasingly narrow fields of understanding, which causes them to forget common skills and universal ideas. In order to obtain some illusion of a grasp of reality, these people deny their interest in things unrelated to their own "virtual realities".
- Social groups are formed around increasingly restricted aspects of reality, such as fanaticism of various forms of popular culture. The collective world views within these groups become increasingly twisted and black-and-white. Those human beings who belong to several self-distorting groups are called "individualists".
- Tools are introduced for activities that do not require tools at all. Humans become dependent on these tools, which causes natural human abilities to decay and renders humans more and more helpless. For example, some humans require specialized gadgets for even the simplest tasks of cleaning, washing, transportation, arithmetic, etc.
- Complex tools are introduced as replacements for simple tools. Simplest tools can be manufactured or at least repaired by almost anyone, while complex tools require vast industrial networks. The practical advantages of complex tools are often quite minimal.
- Even the most complex tools become more and more complex. The most dramatical pseudo-advancement can be seen in any device that involves software programming.
- Altho humans become more and more critical against some forms of mental imperialism (such as various techniques of advertisement), they fail to notice the deeper-level manipulation which leads them to praise the increasing complexity of the world - to worship the Demon of Complexity.
The activity of the Demon of Complexity is a challenge to Hacca Craft. In order to reach a balance of complexity in one's life and mind, it is important to greatly emphasize simplicity and minimalism in everything.
